 Lawrence Carlton Moore, Jr., age 83, died at Duke Hospital on May 23rd,


Lawrence, or “Lang” as he was mostly known, was born April 6th, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the late Willie Prince Moore and Lawrence Carlton Moore, Sr of Mississippi.  He had an older sister, the late Anne Burney.  The family moved to Charlotte, NC in where Lang met his wife, Guthrie “Dutton” Lemmond, at East Mecklenburg High School.  He received a B.S. in mathematics from North Carolina State University in , studied in Germany after college, and then earned a Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology in  From there he joined the Duke University Mathematics Department where he pursued his interest in the application of nonstandard analysis to the theory of Banach spaces and in later years focused on improving the instruction of calculus.  Lang believed in making the concepts of calculus accessible through real-world problem solving, which led him to co-author the textbook Calculus: Modeling a Obituary pennsylvania newspaper.
